Strokes and cerebrovascular diseases account for the greatest number of deaths in Korea and can result in sudden paralysis, speech problems, loss of consciousness and dementia. Strokes are divided into cerebral infarction (clogging of the blood vessels in the brain) and brain hemorrhage (popping of the blood vessels in the brain). If admitted to the hospital during an acute phase for professional treatment, critical patients can recover to a normal condition. However, if treatment is delayed in the early stage and proper treatment is not performed, the prognosis is often not good.
The Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Center at Dongguk University Medical Center was established in 2005 and treats approximately 500 acute stroke patients every year 24/7. Relevant departments such as neurology, neurosurgery, emergency medicine, rehabilitative medicine, radiology and herbal medicine are working closely together as a team to provide the best stroke treatment. In addition, the center operates the Stroke Intensive Care Unit for treating patients in acute phases. For patients in a more critical condition, a separate care unit is available. The center has been awarded with a grade A for 2 consecutive years in the stroke treatment quality assessment carried out by the government. It also has been featured in the media as a hospital with an excellent treatment program for acute phase strokes.
